The yearly Brooklyn Frontiers High School Thanksgiving Celebration took place on November 26th, 2014 and was AMAZING!!! The gym looked magical, decorated with the paper chains, homemade centerpieces, and We Are Thankful For birds made by all the student groups. In all, for the 3rd Annual Group Paper Chain contest, the groups created 8,662 links! The winner of the contest was Kelly’s group with 1,470 links followed closely by Raylene’s group with 1,238 links. (Last year’s winners, Christine’s group, presented the golden paper chain to Kelly’s group at their pizza party.)Even better than the decorations was the spirit. Student Leadership set the tone with a kind welcome and a Gratefulness display. Student representatives from each group read poems or essays on the subject of what they were thankful for. Students spoke about what our community means to them, thanked the staff for seeing them and never giving up, and spoke about the bond they felt to each other.Christine’s group surprised her with birthday wishes. Between all of these speeches, students from M&M’s American Sign Language Class signed an ASL translation of popular songs. It was AWESOME!!! Students erupted with applause when Elijah W. signed along with “I Believe I Can Fly!†All student performers were excellent: funny and heartfelt. The BFHS band brought it all home.
As usual, staff and students alike brought in tons of food: turkey, stuffing, rice, kung pao chicken provided by the DOE, cupcakes in the shapes of turkeys, banana pudding, everything! Everyone left stuffed and content.
Our community is growing. For our first graduating class of 2015, this was their last Thanksgiving at BFHS. For our new students, this was their first. But, all together, we are building rock-solid traditions and a foundation that cannot be shaken.
Happy Thanksgiving to every, single person in the BFHS family.
